Heat Pump Tune Up in Maryland, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C.

A heat pump tune up keeps the system running the way it was designed to run and gives you a documented picture of its condition. Because a heat pump both heats and cools, it runs year round and accumulates wear on both sides, so regular service matters more than it does for a system that only works one season.

At Smith & Company HVAC in Crownsville, MD, we tune up residential and commercial heat pumps for property owners across Maryland, including Anne Arundel County and Baltimore County, and Washington, D.C.. We inspect the equipment, service the key components, test both heating and cooling modes, and explain what we find.

Call us at (410) 972-9343 to schedule a heat pump tune up for your property.

What a Heat Pump Tune Up Includes

A tune up is scheduled service that inspects, cleans, and adjusts the system, then confirms it runs correctly in both modes. The exact checklist depends on your equipment and the maintenance package you approve.

A heat pump tune up visit may include:

  • Coil cleaning: cleaning indoor and outdoor coils so the system can transfer heat efficiently
  • Refrigerant check: measuring refrigerant performance, handled by an appropriately certified technician
  • Electrical inspection: testing connections, capacitors, and contactors, and tightening what is loose
  • Moving parts: checking and lubricating motors and fan components to reduce friction and wear
  • Condensate drain: clearing the drain line to help prevent water backup and moisture problems
  • Airflow observations: checking airflow and the filter, and replacing standard filters per your agreement
  • Defrost and controls: confirming the defrost cycle and thermostat are operating as they should
  • Performance test: running the system in both heating and cooling modes to confirm it responds correctly
Book a tune up with a technician who services the system and explains what they find.

When to schedule a Heat Pump Tune Up

A heat pump runs in every season, so most systems benefit from service twice a year, once in the spring before cooling season and once in the fall before heating season. Timing service before each peak season means the system is checked before you rely on it, not after a problem shows up. Beyond the seasonal schedule, consider a tune up when:
  • It has been more than a year: since the last professional service
  • A new season is coming: and you want the system ready for the demand
  • You have noticed a change: in airflow, noise, comfort, or energy use
  • Your warranty requires it: many manufacturer warranties call for documented annual maintenance

How Much Does a Heat Pump Tune Up Cost?

The cost of a heat pump tune up depends on the system and the service, so the honest answer is that it varies. A few factors affect the price:

  • The type and number of systems: one heat pump versus multiple units, residential or commercial
  • Single visit or a plan: a one-time tune up versus a maintenance agreement with visits scheduled through the year
  • System condition: a system that has not been serviced in years may need more attention
  • Access and location: how the equipment is reached and where the property sits in our service area

Our Heat Pump Tune Up Process

  • Inspect the system: we examine the indoor and outdoor units, controls, and accessible components.
  • Service the components: we clean coils, check refrigerant performance, service electrical and moving parts, and clear the drain.
  • Test both modes: we run the heat pump in heating and cooling to confirm it responds correctly, including the defrost cycle.
  • Explain the findings: we tell you what we observed, separate urgent issues from future concerns, and answer your questions.
  • Document the result: we provide a record of the system’s condition and recommend appropriate next steps.

Frequently Asked Questions about Heat Pump Tune Ups

What is a heat pump tune up?

A heat pump tune up is scheduled professional service that inspects, cleans, and adjusts the system, then tests it in both heating and cooling modes. A technician cleans the coils, checks refrigerant performance and electrical components, services moving parts, clears the condensate drain, and confirms the system runs correctly. The goal is to keep the heat pump operating the way it was designed to and to document its condition, so you can plan repairs or replacement based on how the system is actually performing.

My heat pump is loud lately. Would a tune up help?

A tune up is a reasonable first step, because a technician can find and correct some causes of noise, such as a loose component, a part that needs lubrication, or debris in the outdoor unit. That said, several conditions can cause a heat pump to get louder, and some point to a repair rather than routine service. New or sudden noises like grinding, banging, or screeching should be looked at promptly. During the visit we identify what is causing the sound and explain whether the tune up resolved it or the system needs a heat pump repair.

How do you tune up a heat pump?

A full tune up combines homeowner tasks with professional service. Between visits, you can change the filter every one to three months, keep leaves and debris at least two feet from the outdoor unit, and make sure vents are not blocked. The professional side covers the work that needs training and certification: cleaning the coils, measuring refrigerant, testing electrical components, servicing motors, clearing the drain, and running a full performance test in both modes. Refrigerant and electrical work should always be left to an appropriately certified technician.

When should you tune up a heat pump?

Because a heat pump runs year round, most systems benefit from service twice a year, once in the spring before cooling season and once in the fall before heating season. At a minimum, plan for a professional tune up once a year. It is also worth scheduling one if it has been more than a year since the last service, if you have noticed a change in comfort or noise, or if your manufacturer warranty requires documented maintenance.

How often does a heat pump need service?

At least once a year, and ideally twice for a system that runs in both seasons. The right schedule depends on the equipment, how heavily it runs, and the demands of the property, which we review when setting up your service.

Is a tune up the same as a repair?

No. A tune up is scheduled maintenance to keep a working system running well and catch developing issues. A repair fixes a specific problem. If a tune up turns up a fault, we explain what we found and discuss the right heat pump repair for it.

Smith & Company came out to service my HVAC Unit and upon inspecting the unit a growth, later identified as mold was discovered. Even with the mold the technician Michael was able to assess the matter. With the outstanding customer service of Michael, I was able to get a recommendation regarding how to service the unit and proceed with getting the mold removed. Michael not only followed up with me after his initial visit to my home, when he came back he ensured that I knew what next steps were. I truly appreciate being treated like I was a part of the family. I’d highly recommend Smith & Company to anyone looking for quality service and “like home” quality customer service.

Dave and Pepe were super fast and very efficient. Totally satisfied with the duct work they were able to do! We got a new slot for the air filter installed, and it took them less than 20 minutes from arrival to departure. Nice gentlemen to interact with as well.

I owe a great deal to this company. They service my HVAC and do an exceptional job without the worry of being over charged. More significantly, the owner of this company, Mike Smith, took on a large insurance company on my behalf, who had denied my coverage, and he won. The insurance company settled and provided me with the costs incurred by the damage. Mike Smith was not asked to help me. Following the decision of the insurance company to deny my claim, I phoned Smith and Company to ask for an estimate to repair/replace all lost in the event. Mike Smith asked me what happened and immediately thought that I should pursue the insurance company to re-evaluate my loss. I gave him permission to speak to the insurance company on my behalf. Mike drafted a well articulated chronology of the events that occurred, he cited why he believed the loss should be covered, he quoted insurance rules and regulations and even took the lead in several three-way phone calls that I had with the insurance company. He did all of this at no expense to me. He explained that he took this battle on for me because he recognized that I wasn’t being provided with the coverage that’s, under my insurance plan, should have been covered. I have never met anyone, or any company like this one. I am so grateful and will never be able to repay them this amount of gratitude that I owe them.

"Austin and Edwin are wonderful ambassadors of your company … they both were very pleasant & professional to work with … they communicated very well, explained what needed to be done, then executed both efficiently and very effectively … it was not a quick fix, as they were at my residence for the better part of 4 hours … and together with the several different women in administrative office roles I communicated with, they all together helped make a very trying and stressful weeks long very challenging experience for my wife and I, into a tolerable one with a very happy ending … I want to shout out a very hearty THANK YOU to Smith & Company HVAC for a job VERY WELL DONE!!!".
